Our pets ARE our emotional support dogs, although they may not be certified, they see us through everything. We should ALL return the love and favor to them when they are anxious, fearful, not feeling well, when they don't want to go for a walk outside and through thunderstorms and fireworks. If we aren't taking care of their feelings, like they take care of ours, you're doing something very wrong. If you have any questions about this, give me a call. I'm here to listen and help.

Here is some more "scientific" studies that support my blog post.

Science has provided substantial evidence to support the idea that dogs have feelings and can form strong emotional bonds with humans. Here are some key findings and insights from scientific research on this topic:
  1. Emotional Bonding: Studies have shown that dogs are capable of forming deep emotional bonds with their human owners. These bonds are similar in many ways to the attachment bonds that infants form with their caregivers.
  2. Oxytocin Release: Interactions between dogs and humans have been found to increase oxytocin levels in both species. Oxytocin is often referred to as the "love hormone" or "bonding hormone" and is associated with social bonding and feelings of love and affection.
  3. Empathy: Research has suggested that dogs can display empathy towards humans and other dogs. They can often sense when their owners are upset or stressed and may offer comfort and support.
  4. Attachment Behaviors: Dogs exhibit attachment behaviors such as seeking proximity to their owners, following them around, and showing signs of distress when separated from them. These behaviors are indicative of strong emotional connections.
  5. Social Cognition: Dogs have been found to possess impressive social cognitive abilities. They can read human facial expressions and body language, which helps them understand and respond to human emotions.
  6. Long-Term Relationships: Dogs are known for their ability to maintain long-term relationships with humans. Unlike some animals that may only interact with humans for specific purposes (e.g., for food), dogs often form enduring companionships.
  7. Conditional Love: While it's clear that dogs can form strong emotional bonds, the nature of their emotions may differ from human emotions. Dogs may love their owners conditionally based on care, attention, and companionship.
  8. Attachment Security: Research has shown that dogs with secure attachment to their owners tend to be more confident and better able to cope with stress and new situations.
  9. Stress Reduction: Interacting with dogs has been found to reduce human stress levels and improve overall well-being. The presence of a beloved dog can have calming and comforting effects.
  10. Individual Variation: It's important to note that there is individual variation among dogs, and not all dogs will express their emotions and attachment in the same way. Factors such as breed, upbringing, and socialization can also influence a dog's behavior and emotional expression.
In summary, science supports the idea that dogs have feelings, form emotional bonds with humans, and can experience emotions such as love and empathy. These findings have contributed to our understanding of the complex and mutually beneficial relationships between humans and dogs.
